Financial Support

Teaching Assistantships are available for qualified students. The annual stipend in the academic year 2007/2008 is $15,145 plus a full tuition scholarship. Annual increments are usually made to the stipend. Research Assistantships are available with comparable support. Students may earn from $1,800 to $5,000 with full tuition waiver during the summer from individual faculty research grants as Research Assistants. Exceptionally qualified students are encouraged to apply for fellowships. Full or partial tuition scholarships are also available. Continued appointment as Teaching Assistant requires satisfactory performance of the assigned TA duties.

Students from non-English speaking countries who apply for Teaching Assistantships are required to achieve a TOEFL score of at least 600. All students who receive teaching or research assistantships are required to participate in a faculty research program while pursuing a graduate degree at Stony Brook.

In the Spring of 2008, there were 59 full-time students in the program; 14 were Teaching Assistants and 16 held Research Assistantship appointments.
