Research Interests and History

Dr. Nejat received her Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toronto in Toronto , Canada . She is currently the director of the Robotics I Laboratory and founder of the Autonomous Systems Group at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In addition, she is a faculty advisor for the Stony Brook Robot Design Team. Her current research areas include autonomous systems, robotics and mechatronics. In particular: (i) the design, development and implementation of autonomous sensing, motion-planning and control systems pertinent in high-precision autonomous motion-planning applications, such as micro localization and micro manipulation of miniature robotic systems or micro manipulating robots, and for larger scale applications such as autonomous vehicles for search and rescue, surveillance, reconnaissance , planetary surface exploration, rehabilitation and biomedical, and manufacturing applications, (ii) the development of fault diagnostic schemes for mechatronic systems, and (iii) the development and application of microsensors in robotics , automotive and medical technologies. Her work has been published in several international journals and conferences. Dr. Nejat is the recipient of several awards from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. She is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
