THE CIVIL ENGINEERING RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FELLOWSHIP

Description:

The Civil Engineering Research Experience Award provides high-achieving civil engineering undergraduate students with an early opportunity to become engaged in research with faculty in the Department of Civil Engineering during the summer periods. The award is in the form of a paid research assistantship of $5,000 over 10 weeks. Students are expected to conduct research on a substantive, faculty-guided project, and contribute and participate in related professional development activities. Award winners will not be able to pick their own research project. Two awards per year are estimated.

The Research Experience Fellowship is in partnership with Posillico Inc.

Eligibility:

The Civil Engineering Research Experience Award Fellowship will provide support for undergraduates in the civil engineering program. Students who are eligible to apply for and receive the award must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in the civil engineering program at SBU in the preceding semester and the semester following the summer research experience.
  2. Have an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher.
  3. Able to commit to full-time research activity on the SBU campus during at least 10 weeks.

To Apply:

  • Submit a cover letter (indicating academic and research interests), resume, and unofficial transcripts to the Civil Engineering Department Chair via email.
  • The application period is 5pm (EST) March 1 to 5pm (EST) March 15.

If Selected:

  • Students selected for the award will receive an offer letter identifying the assigned faculty mentor and research project. The student can choose to accept the match or decline the award. Students cannot ask for an alternative project.
  • Award recipients are expected to conduct research during the summer over a 10 week period on a substantive, faculty-guided project, and contribute and participate in related professional development activities.
  • The start date for the 10-week summer experience will be determined in consultation with the faculty advisor.
