THE CIVIL ENGINEERING DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

Description:

The aim of the Civil Engineering Diversity Scholarship is to support undergraduate students enrolled in the civil engineering major who are committed to advance the interests of gender equality and civil rights within the civil engineering profession. The award consists of a $1,000 distributed in two equal installments per semester.

Eligibility:

The Scholarship will provide support for undergraduate students in the Civil Engineering Department. Students who are eligible to apply for and receive the Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be enrolled full time as an undergraduate student in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences as defined by Stony Brook policy.
  2. Demonstrate high academic achievement as defined by Stony Brook policy.
  3. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, based on completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
    • Undergraduate students participating in the New York State Excelsior Scholarship program (“Excelsior”) are not eligible for tuition support. For students participating in Excelsior, this Scholarship is solely and exclusively for non-tuition expenses as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.
    • Non-tuition expenses typically include room and board, insurance, student fees, travel, books and supplies, personal expenses or other common non-tuition expenses as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.
  4. The Donor intends that when awarding this scholarship, preference be given to students who have demonstrated interest in creating and promoting equal opportunities for all in the fields of science or engineering. Examples of demonstrated interest may include but are not limited to, student’s coursework and involvement in student organizations, such as the Society of Women in Science and Engineers (WISE) and the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Scholarship recipients will be evaluated for continuation of eligibility prior to each semester to ensure that the qualifications of the Scholarship are still being met. If the qualifications of the Scholarship are not being met, it will result in the termination of Scholarship funds.

Submit the following documents as a single PDF file to the Civil Engineering Department Chair via email:

    1. A cover letter,
    2. A one-page statement outlining personal and professional goals,
    3. A one-page statement on diversity and inclusion in science and engineering,
    4. A resume.
    5. Unofficial transcripts.

The application period is 5pm (EST) January 15 to 5pm (EST) January 30.
