About Stony Brook Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Stony Brook University offers an undergraduate BE degree. We also have a combined BE/MS program as well as graduate programs leading to the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. A broad curriculum is available in our graduate programs with concentrations in Mechanical Design, Solid Mechanics, Thermal Sciences and Fluid Mechanics. The faculty is active in research, with funding from Federal and State agencies such as the NSF, Department of Defense, Brookhaven National Laboratory and from the private industry.

Location

Stony Brook University is located in scenic Stony Brook on Long Island, New York. Stony Brook is large campus that provides for its students in a variety of ways. There are many places to eat and play on campus and numerous shops and stores only a short car or bus ride away. For the more studies engineer there are a many quite centers on campus to study for midterms and work with others classmates to solve complex homework assignments. The mechanical engineering department is located in the Engineering Quad on campus, just a few short steps away from the Student Activities Center and the heart of campus, which includes the library and math and physics buildings. The Engineering Quad has its own computing center open till late at night. Perfect for finishing those last minute lab reports!

How to Get Here

By Car
From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left.

 

By Train
Take the Long Island Railroad's Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; bus service to the central campus is provided. Trains to and from Penn generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some lines. Here is the schedule for Stony Brook.

 

By Ferry
Car ferries cross Long Island Sound at Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road, and turn left on Nicolls. The University entrances are the first three intersections you come to. From New London, Connecticut to Orient Point, Long Island Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road and proceed as above.

 

By Plane
Long Island's Islip-MacArthur Airport is 16 miles from the campus and is serviced by direct flights by major airlines and commuter lines. New York City Area Airports (JFK, LaGuardia and Newark) are 50 miles to the west.
